Manggarai Flood Gate

Photo hunting is not always possible in the mountain, beach, sea or lake. Close human activity in unusual place also is an interesting spot. Floodgates for most people should be avoided because of the garbage, trash and dirty.

On 17 January 2013, dirty brown floodwaters engulfed many parts of Jakarta after heavy rains caused dams to burst and rivers to overflow. Flooding has caused damage to homes and businesses. It blocked roads and forced businesses in the capital to close. But a transport Ministry spokesman said air travel was not disrupted. A spokesman for state electricity company PLN said it had cut power supplies to a number of areas to minimise the danger of electrocutions.

MANGGARAI FLOODGATE
That day, since i can not go nowhere, almost no public transport operated, i rent a motorcycle taxi to go to one of floodgate. This floodgate is a flood control gate in Central Jakarta.

HISTORY
The official record from the public works ministry states it was constructed in 1914, and was used officially four years later. The former head of the ministry's directorate general of irrigation, Soebandi, offered another version. He once wrote that the Dutch floodgate was built in 1910 together with the construction of a canal called Bandjir Kanaal (now Banjir Kanal River).
Both facilities, he said, were designed to help divert the volume of water flowing into the Ciliwung River from the south.

Under the water-control system, the main areas in the city center -- including Weltevreden (now around Lapangan Banteng area in Central Jakarta), Koningsplein (Medan Merdeka park area in Central Jakarta) and Molenvliet (the area of Jl. Hayam
Wuruk and Jl. Gajah Mada in Central Jakarta) -- were freed from floods.

The history associated with West Flood Canal construction, starting with the idea of connecting Krukut River with Ciliwung River, thus diverting the flow of water that had flooded the Menteng.

Prof. Herman Van Breen is the architect in charge of flood control planning through the West Flood Canal, polder system, and plans for the East Flood Canal at that time. But until 2003, only the West Flood Canal successfully realized. As a result, the water just flows from that should inundate Jakarta, switch inundated lower areas in Manggarai and Jatinegara. It was only after President Megawati, the idea was again followed by the East Flood Canal.

Manggarai floodgate facing problems pile of garbage every year that disrupted work floodgate. This is due to poor awareness of waste management and residential areas were built near Ciliwung river. In 2011, the doorman claimed waste water can reach 100 cubic meters per day, and more than tripled during the floods.

For some people, this place is a source of income.

Lots of wood waste that can be sold or plastic that can be collected and then be sold it to collector then returned to the factory to be recycled. Especially when heavy rain or flood. Many garbage were floating.

Jakarta International Airport (Soekarno-Hatta) is the main airport serving the greater Jakarta area on the island of Java, Indonesia.
The airport is named after the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta. The airport is often called Cengkareng by Indonesian. Its IATA code, CGK is originated from the word Cengkareng, a subdistrict located to the northwest of the city.

So, we got there very quick since there were less traffic on sunday. Took the airport toll road and out to the exit gate before entering airport area and down the road around circling the airport backyard. Our main goal is to photograph the plane while taking off or landing.
